6 Years on the York Regional Police Services Board
For six years, Joanna Yu served on the York Regional Police Services Board, helping York Region remain one of Canada's safest communities. She was deeply involved in selecting the Chief and Deputy Chiefs, reviewing annual police budgets and five-year strategic plans, and overseeing construction of the new police headquarters, which was completed ahead of schedule and under budget.
Provincial Industry Discipline Committee Member
Appointed by the provincial government in May 2018, Joanna continues to serve on the Discipline Committee of the Condominium Management Regulatory Authority of Ontario (CMRAO). In this regulatory role, she helps uphold professional integrity, transparency, accountability, and the rule of law across the condominium management industry.
30 Years of Property Management Leadership
As a Registered Property Manager and Founding President of the Canadian Chinese Property Management Association, Joanna brings 30 years of practical management experience. Maintenance fees at properties under her management have remained 10% to 25% lower than at comparable buildings. Her work spans budgeting, reserve funds, fire safety, snow removal, landscaping, waste management, and road repairs—the same core services involved in running a small municipality. She has also hosted dozens of public forums and seminars, helping thousands of owners and tenants.
Veteran Media Voice and Cultural Bridge
A graduate of the Sun Yat-sen University Law Department and a former lawyer, Joanna immigrated to Canada in the 1990s and worked as a police news reporter for the World Journal. She later became a veteran media professional and columnist, appearing on radio, television, and in print to explain policing and property management. She has co-produced television documentaries and authored books on immigrant life, international students, community policing, education, and parenting.
Rooted in Ward 6 for 23 Years
Joanna and her husband have proudly called Ward 6 home for 23 years, raising their two children here. Her community service has been recognized with the Queen Elizabeth II Platinum Jubilee Award. She also serves as a promotional ambassador for the Hong Fook Mental Health Association and supports grassroots initiatives including Neighbourhood Watch.
